Expressions Highlighted on CPTV!

May 14 2009 -

All Things Connecticut - a new eight-part weekly series tells the stories that make the Nutmeg State a unique place to live, work and play. The series, which is sponsored by People’s United Bank, Comcast and with the support of the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, highlights Connecticut as you’ve never seen it before through five noteworthy segments—Spotlight on the Arts, Inside Out, Treading Lightly, Positively Connecticut™ and Capturing Connecticut.

CPTV recently worked with Expressions Pottery Workshop in East Granby to create a remarkable segment for All Things Connecticut on the aesthetics of pottery. Our members and students are very excited and grateful to be part of this original and innovative new series. To view the aired segment please visit CPTV.

Altered Forms and Murals” with Frank Matranga

September 12 & 13, 2009 (Saturday & Sunday) 9:00 – 3:00

Demonstration, lecture and slide show held at Expressions Pottery Workshop, East Granby, CT.

Frank has been a potter for over 50 years. His first commission, seven bas-relief murals for Sears was just the start of producing over fifty murals during Frank’s life for libraries, banks, restaurants and private residences. In addition to his mural work, Frank has created both functional and non-functional objects in clay, where he has produced the work through a myriad of firing techniques, such as high fire stoneware, raku and primitive firing techniques. His glaze arsenal includes over a hundred formulas. A large body of work has a distinctive carved design with organic elements and stunning altering of the thrown lines. Such a diverse design has led Frank's work to be honored by many awards and the inclusion in important exhibitions, such as Young Americans, Ceramic Nationals, Seattle World's Fair, California State Fair, as well as many other national and international group and solo shows. In the 1970's, he was also honored with solo shows in Japan. Frank’s studio is in Manhattan Beach, just south of LA.

Jack and Sue Sasso (SassyBlue Pottery in East Orleans) met Frank and Casey Matranga in 2006 on a trip through Northern France and discovered a mutual love of ceramics. They were excited to share his expertise with the potters back East.

Frank will demonstrate the process of making ceramic murals as well as altered and slab constructed forms with lecture, discussion and slide show during lunch each day.

Check out the Matranga websites Matranga Studio , or online articles user name = Frank; pw = 1pots

EMPTY BOWLS Community fundraising!

October 3 2009 -

Saturday October 3 is a special day for the potters at Expressions. That is the day of our 'Empty Bowls' event. Empty Bowls takes place at the East Granby Community Center.

Our studio works in conjunction with the Women's Club of East Granby , area restaurants and other giving people to host this fund raiser, which benefits the East Granby Food Pantry .

All year long the potters and students of Expressions create and donate over 300 beautiful, high fired stoneware bowls in every color and style imaginable.

On 'Empty Bowls' day, these are available for sale. With each bowl, the purchaser receives their choice of bowl filled with one of the soups prepared by local restaurants. This is served with a slice of bread and an invitation to come back to Expressions to see pottery demos, visit our studio and gallery and enjoy delicious desserts.

We hope to see you there this year!
