“Each piece I make seems to be the starting point for the next piece. The touching of clay brings meaning and honesty to everything in the studio. The unlimited possibilities of clay, as a medium, keep me forever excited.”
Beginning to work with clay in college in 1963, Avis found the medium that demanded her devotion. Working in clay for over twenty-eight years, her work is multifaceted. She produces hundreds of stoneware pieces each year that are designed for everyday use. For these, careful attention is given to durability and function, as well as beauty. The range of this work includes singe items such as lamps, teapots, bowls, mugs and plates, as well as entire wedding registries. Another part of Avis’ work includes pieces fired by the alternate firing methods of raku and saggar. For these she pays close attention to balancing the design of form and surface. These forms may be classical or free but always have an element of excitement created by the final firing when flames come indirect contact with the pots.
Avis exhibits in shops and galleries regionally and is represented in the permanent collection at the Slater Museum. She was the recipient of an Artist Fellowship from the Greater Hartford Arts in 2002. Avis teaches at Expressions Pottery Workshop, East Granby, CT.
Her work is sold at the Expressions Gallery, at the Farmington Valley Arts Center , Avon, CT, as well as at her home studio/gallery (click on the link for her personal website).
